Do you know how to Write an Effective Cover Letter?

The purpose of a cover letter is

1. To introduce yourself,

2. Mention the job (or kind of job) you’re applying for (or looking for)

3. Show how your skills and experience match the skills and experience needed for the job you have applied for and
4. Encourages the reader to read your resume.

So yes a  well-written over letter is like your first pitch about yourself, it gives you a chance to sell yourself to the employer and explain why you are an ideal candidate for the vacancy. I have listed a few tips below covering a few important aspects w.r.t a Cover Letter.

What to Include in a Cover Letter:

While writin a cover letter try to limit your letter to a single page. Match the employer’s needs and your skills that will appeal to the employer’s

self-interest Avoid using long and intricate sentences and paragraphs. T o make use of action verbs and the active voice it helps in conveying confidence, optimism, and enthusiasm coupled with respect and professionalism. Always arrange the points in a logical sequence;

What not to include in a Cover Letter:

In  cover letter there is no need to share any personal information or any information about your family until requested. And if you don’t match up for all the qualifications in the job that you are applying for , don’t highlight

Organising Content of a Cover Letter

When starting to write any cover letter, always plan the Content of your letter based on the requirements of the job you’re applying for. A cover letter essentially has three parts:

Opening Paragraph

An opening paragraph will always start with a Salutation.

“Dear Sir or Madam?” or “To whom it may concern?”

Further state why you are writing the letter. You can Begin by telling the employer the position you are applying for and how you learned about the opportunity.


Try to establish a point of contact with the reader. May be be realting with an Advertisement in a specific place for a specific position or reference of particular person that will help the reader relate. Then give some brief idea about who you are.

Body of Cover Letter

In body of the Cover Letter,Highlight a few of the most salient points from your enclosed resume. Describe how your previous job experiences, skills, and abilities will allow you to meet the company’s current job requirements. Further state how you will add value to the Company and the facts about company that attract you to become part of the team. This will help the reader develop Positive Image.

Closing Paragraph

A closing Paragraph should have a polite request for an action- like requesting for an interview. Also mention what files have been attached for reference- Resume, sample of your work etc.
Thank the reader for their time and that you look forward to hear from them bit not in the same old mundane manner. Be creative with your phrases.

A cover letter should essentially pump life to your resume. With the help of a cover letter and by aligning your resume with the job specific role, you can highlight why you are a perfect candidate.
